LASER ACNE TREATMENT
Clinical research over the years has led to major improvements in
treatment of acne: of both thickened and deeply colored red scars. After
one or two pulsed dye laser treatments, a 57% to 83% improvement can be
observed. Facial acne scars have been very responsive to laser treatments.
The laser works by pulsating heat below the skin's surface and reducing
the size of the sebaceous glands, which are largely responsible for acne.
Patients use a cream to slightly numb the affected area, before the laser
is applied. The treatment lasts just minutes and causes only slight
discomfort and results are seen immediately.
Great strides have been made in the treatment of acne scarring. Pulsed dye
lasers are now the preferred treatment for red or thick scars, whereas
carbon dioxide laser resurfacing for atrophic scars is now surpassing the
results obtained from dermabrasion and chemical peels.
Patients need to be aware that
many states do not distinguish who can and cannot perform procedures with
lasers. Since skin treatments using lasers can carry potential side
effects, they should be performed by a qualified physician or under direct
physician supervision. Babar Rao, MD is both a Board Certified
Dermatologist and Board Certified Dermatopathologist certified to perform
laser procedures.
